Weekly Spelling
Monday morning pretest - Students will develop individualized spelling list based on the results of the pretest. Words from the pretest which challenged the students will be used on the final list. Students will choose additional words to make up the final word list. Students will be tested each Friday on their final word list.

Monthly Book Projects
Students will be asked prepare monthy book projects at home. Book choices are up to the student, however the type of project is predetermined. Make sure to be reading regularly, as the months will pass quickly! Students may bring thier selected books to school and read during spare time.
September - Paper Bag Book Talk - Collect various objects that hold meaning within the book. These items must fit in a paper lunch bag. Students will present their items and the connections to the book.
October - Newspaper Article. - Write a feature article (with a headline) that tells the story of the book as it might be found on the front page of a newspaper in the town where the story takes place.
November - Non-Ficiton November - Students will read non-fiction book of their choice and complete mini-report cube. Each side of the cube will represent different characteristics from the book. Ex: book on lions - sides of the cube might be physical characteristics, diet, habitat, etc...
December - Character Sculpture - Use any combination of soap, wood, clay, sticks, wire, stones, old toy pieces, or any other object. Students will explain the character's importance to the book to the class.
January - Storybook Cafe - Students will bring in a treat or snack that has relevance from the book. Students will dress like a character from the book and present their book / snack to guests in our classroom. Parents, families and other classrooms will be invited into our classroom to learn about our books.
February / March - Write a Script - This project may be completed inividually, partners or a small group. Students will write a short script and present their plays to the class.
April - Mini-book - Create a picture book version of the chosen chapter book.
May - Diorama - Create a scene of importance from the book.
June - Project of your choice
